2011 ASAFA Carnival

The 2011 ASAFA Carnival was held in Melbourne the week before Easter/ANZAC Day. With torrential rain preventing the use of the Ted Whitten Oval, the carnival was moved to Geelong and played at the St Albans ground for the first 2 matches with the Saturday game being played at Sunshine. The RANAFA squads used the CERBERUS facilities for a 5 day training camp before relocating to RAAF Laverton once the games began.

Girls

The Girls saw what was upon them when they witnessed Army destroy RAAF iin a 91 pt drubbing in game 1. Final scores were Army 14.7 (91) defeated RAAF 0.0 (0)

Game 2
In a very solid performance the girls defeated RAAF by 115 pts sending a strong message to Army. Niki Furlong kicked 9 goals and was well supported up forward by a number of first time players including Beardy, Breanna Abel and Niki Palmer. The more seasoned performers controlled the centre square to provide a wall across the half back line and continually propell the ball into our forward line.

Game 3

In what proved to be a fitting finale to the 2011 carnival, a closely fought out match provided many highlights. The ball was played predominately between half forward and half back with scoring opportunities hard to come by, reminiscent of previous wins. The onballers played a tough and uncompromising brand of football with Rosso leading the backline to repel a number of Army forward thrusts.

At no stage did either side break away and, with a more rounded team performance, Navy were able to hang on to win by 2 points in a nervous final few moments. Again the win was set up by the more seasoned performances of Krystelle, Trish and Amy who were well supported by a number of less experienced players in Beardy, Merc and Shorty.
